Music

At St. Augustine's, our music curriculum aims to provide a well-rounded education that instills a lifelong appreciation for music, while equipping students with the skills needed for formal exams. Our curriculum focuses on three key disciplines: critical listening, composing, and performing, and becomes progressively more complex throughout KS3, KS4, and KS5. 

The TEEP teaching cycle guides our music lessons, helping students construct meaning and apply their knowledge through a variety of adaptive teaching strategies. Assessments occur regularly, with KS3 students having three main assessments per year, while KS4 and KS5 students have access to practice questions and examiner's reports to aid their progress. 

We believe that music has a significant impact on students' mental health and well-being. Our goal is to foster an appreciation for music, enjoyment, and lifelong interest in the subject. Music education at St. Augustine's promotes a wide range of essential skills, including performing, composing, aural awareness, music history, essay writing, and the ability to analyse various music genres. By offering performance opportunities and encouraging past musicians to engage with our current students, we hope to inspire and motivate everyone to embrace music's power and impact, living by our motto: "Together we're stronger!"

Key Stage 3

In KS3, students explore their voice, learn a variety of instruments, and delve into different genres and traditions. They learn to compose effectively, express themselves through ensemble performance, and identify musical elements and composition devices through critical listening.

GCSE

At KS4, students build on their KS3 knowledge to compose, perform, and complete a critical listening exam.

A Level

Those who continue to A Level can further develop their skills and understanding of music.
